While living in East Gippsland, Helen was inspired by the Rural Women’s Program introduced by Helenè Brophy. Her book, Growing and Learning in Rural Communities: Revised Edition is a contribution to the community engagement sector. It gives access to skills, knowledge and resources that assist organisations, workers and communities work towards living inharmony with each other and their environment.

Join us for this inspiring event with author Judy Walker!
In 1979, newly qualified midwife Judy Baker embarked on a transformative journey to Malamulo Seventh-day Adventist Mission Hospital in Malawi. Her book is a compelling recount of her four-year mission that unfolds the rich tapestry of faith, dedication and profound human connection experienced in one of Africa’s most remote regions.
The narrative is woven with vivid stories of Judy’s daily encounters at the mission hospital, a place where medical practice intersects deeply with spiritual conviction. Each chapter is a testament to the miracles and challenges she witnessed, painting a vivid picture of life in a mission setting where every day brought new trials and triumphs.

Are your little ones curious about the world? Do they want to know more about the night sky, or how sound travels? We’re excited to announce that library members can now borrow one of 17 different Science Discovery Boxes – themed, age appropriate science and nature kits.
There are three ranges available:
Each activity is carefully researched and comes with helpful notes to explain the activity. These boxes are designed to be used with adult supervision and participation – they’re a great family activity.
These kits are available at the Bairnsdale Library, however, you can place a reservation online, by phone or in person at the library and the kit (when available) will be sent to your local branch or mobile library for collection.
As we anticipate high demand for these boxes the loan period is four weeks, with a limit of one kit per family. Borrowers will be fully responsible for the boxes that they borrow. Loss or damage of items will incur a charge.

The Seed Library is available at each of our libraries across the region, including Mobile Libraries and lets you cultivate food and plants at home, share seeds, and build your gardening knowledge. Together, we don’t just grow plants, we grow a community. Library members can borrow up to three seed packets at any one time to plant and grow in their home gardens.
How does it work?
Borrow: Borrow up to three packets of seeds from your Library
Grow: Plant the seeds in your garden
Collect: Harvest seeds from your garden
Return: Return seeds to your nearest library to share with others.
How to become a Seed Library member
Visit your nearest Library and speak to our friendly staff to begin borrowing. If you aren't yet a member of the library, join today.
Interested in helping with the East Gippsland Seed Library?
We are seeking volunteers to assist with the packing of seeds for our Seed Library. Workshops are held monthly at the Bairnsdale Library.
If you enjoy gardening and/or working with seeds, this may be the perfect opportunity for you to meet with like-minded people and help the community continue to grow produce from their own homes.
