Animal welfare our priority, cat traps withdrawn
Date of Issue:
August 8, 2024

Our free cat trapping cages service is temporarily unavailable.

The Council pound, operated by Animal Aid, has had an outbreak of Feline Herpes Virus (FHV). This has placed a strain on the staff and supporting local veterinary practices.

With animal welfare at the forefront of our decision making, and to support Animal Aid, withdrawing the cat cages from use will allow the facility to get on top of the outbreak. This will help the staff effectively re-clean the facility and attend to the animals already in their care.

What does this mean?

  • We will not be loaning our free cat trapping cages until at least 15 August.
  • We have collected all cat cages on loan to the community and will re-issue to thosecustomers when we have the all-clear to do so.
  • We will provide more information about when this free service can be resumed when we confidently ensure it will not impact on animal welfare.
  • Our Community Laws Officers will continue to trap cats in emergency situations, such as (but not limited to) deceased estates or severe areas/circumstances.

In the event a cat needs to be surrendered, wherever possible, we encourage community members to wait until after 15 August to do so.
