East Gippsland Shire Council has welcomed the announcement by Australian Labor’s Shadow Minister for Regional Development, Senator Raff Ciccone, and ALP Gippsland candidate Alison ‘Sonny’ Stephens of a commitment to support the Bairnsdale Senior Citizens in securing a permanent home.

Mayor Cr John White said Council had long advocated for investment to meet the needs of older residents, and the announcement recognises the importance of providing a dedicated space for senior citizens to connect, participate and thrive.

“Our shire's older residents have shaped this region, and it’s only right we support them. This is a welcome step toward giving them a purpose-built home that suits their needs and keeps them connected,” John said.

“Council has been working closely with the Bairnsdale Senior Citizens to find a long-term solution. This funding reflects both the need and the significant work that has gone into advocating for a permanent, fit-for-purpose facility.”

“This is the kind of commitment that delivers real benefits to the community – and we sincerely hope to see bipartisan support, with the Opposition also backing this important project.”

“We’ll continue to work with the elected government to determine the best location – whether that’s the old kindergarten site or another facility that can be adapted to meet the group’s ongoing needs.”

As part of its broader advocacy efforts in the lead-up to the federal election, Council has proposed a $500,000 investment into a permanent home for the Bairnsdale Senior Citizens. The need for this space has been widely acknowledged by the community and stakeholders.

The project would enable the group to expand their programs and encourage greater wellbeing, inclusion and community connection for older residents in the Bairnsdale area.
