Fees waived to increase dining space
Date of Issue:
December 23, 2024

It is now cheaper and easier for restaurants and cafes to capture the summer tourist trade by introducing a fee waiver for local businesses who want to expand their outdoor dining areas.

The East Gippsland Shire Council initiative, which began last Friday, will run until Monday 30 June 2025 and allows hospitality businesses to increase their outdoor seating footprint without incurring the usual $85-per-square-metre fee.

Mayor Cr John White said the fee waiver aims to support local businesses during the busiest period of the year.

“This is about cutting red tape and giving our local cafes and restaurants a better chance to thrive,” John said.

The trial builds on lessons from similar initiatives that were rolled out during theCOVID-19 pandemic, which successfully supported businesses by enabling expanded outdoor dining at no additional cost.

“By waiving outdoor dining fees, we’re helping businesses accommodate more patrons while ensuring footpaths remain safe and accessible for everyone,” John said.

“This initiative not only supports our local economy but also enhances the vibrancy of our towns, creating more opportunities for visitors and locals to enjoy outdoor dining experiences.”

Applications will be assessed to help business meet safety and accessibility standards, so everyone can use out footpaths safely.
