The creation of a new multipurpose indoor sporting stadium for Lakes Entrance has taken a step forward with East Gippsland Shire Council approving a contract for a design that will provide an important venue for sport and community events.

At the Council Meeting on Tuesday 18 February, Council unanimously awarded the design contract for the facility to community sports infrastructure design studio ARCH.  

The completed design will cater for a range of indoor sports including basketball, netball, volleyball, badminton and futsal, and will feature multiple courts to meet growing demand. The addition of extra courts was identified as a priority due to increased participation levels in basketball and netball, which have outgrown existing venues.

Mayor Cr John White said the development was a much-needed boost for the community.

“This isn’t just about sport - it’s about giving locals a place to come together, stay active, and make the most of a quality facility close to home. We know sports like basketball and netball are booming, and our clubs are struggling to find space. This new venue means more opportunities for training, games and events,” John said.

The design will be primarily funded by the Victorian Government which has committed $800,000 for design development.  

Community and stakeholder input will play a role in shaping the design. Local sporting clubs, schools, disability advocates, traditional owner representatives, and the wider community will all have a chance to provide feedback. The design process will include site assessments, cultural heritage reviews, environmental studies, and accessibility planning to make sure the facility works well for everyone.

The venue will be designed with accessibility, inclusivity, and multi functionality in mind, ensuring athletes, teams, and organisations at all levels can make use of the space. The new courts will provide much-needed capacity for training and competitions, allowing local clubs to grow and host regional tournaments. The large indoor space will support a range of other community uses including functions, arts and culture activities, and community programs.

“Our focus is on building a facility that works for the whole community. Whether it’s a child’s first game of basketball, a regional tournament to develop our elite talent and bring visitors to our region, or a community gathering, this project will support our East Gippsland community. It’s a great step forward for local sport, recreation, and Lakes Entrance,” John said.

The new facility is part of Council’s broader commitment to enhancing local health and wellness, recognising the role that sport and recreation play in community connection and overall wellbeing.
