The Wairewa Transfer Station is back in business, open Saturdays from 8am to 2pm.

East Gippsland Shire Council re-opened the facility – damaged by the Black Summer Bushfires –last Saturday, February 27. Reinstating the transfer station was a key action requested at a community meeting in December last year where about 27 community members met with Councillors Mark Reeves and Arthur Allen and Council officers.

New signage, a waste attendant’s office (complete with a photo storyboard of the fires, regrowth and clean-up of the site) and significant clean-up of vegetation to improve the user experience was completed prior to opening.

The waste service is open once a week for domestic waste, recycling, scrap metal, car batteries and polystyrene. No green or e-waste is accepted at this site.

Council has provided a free waste service to the Wairewa community since the fires through the provision of a large skip bin that was serviced regularly. With the transfer station reopening, this skip bin has now been removed.

A deposit point for burnt fencing wire remains available near the entry to the site on Carl Smith Road to support property owners cleaning-up destroyed fencing.
