We invite you to provide feedback on a proposal to name an unnamed road in Mossiface.

It is proposed to rename Unnamed 7 Road to Hops Lane.

Background

Council received a proposal to rename Unnamed 7 Road to Hops Lane from a Mossiface resident.  The proposal included extensive evidence linking the name to the place (Principle ‘C’ of the Naming Rules).

Council has investigated this proposal and confirms that from the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s, the Calvert family grew hops on the land surrounding the road and dried the hops in their hop kilns. Two of the kilns are still standing on the Calvert farm.  

There is a requirement to retain the historical significance and cultural heritage of an area. Linking a name to a place by recognising past land usage is a way of preserving an area’s history

The above proposed road renaming adheres to the Naming rules for places in Victoria– Statutory requirements for naming roads, features and localities 2022 (the Naming Rules) and Australian New Zealand Standards for Rural and Urban Addressing AS/NZS 4819:2011.

Submissions

This proposal complies with the Naming rules for places in Victoria – Statutory requirements for naming roads, features and localities – 2016.

Affected property owners/ratepayers/occupiers are being consulted regarding the renaming proposal and Council will advertise the results of this consultation in due course.

Community members are invited to respond to this proposal before its formal consideration by the Registrar of Geographic Names Victoria.
