Council is proposing to rename Mt Sam Road OMEO ‘Sam Hill Road’.
The location and extent of the road proposed to be renamed is shown below:
BackgroundCouncil has an obligation in accordance with the Local Government Act 1989, the Geographic Place Names Act 1998 and associated guidelines to ensure public safety and responsible service delivery to the community. Where Council identifies the potential for confusion and risk to public safety, Council must take steps to rectify the situation.
ESTA and CFA have made Council aware of potential confusion being caused by Mt Sam Road leading to Sam Hill. Mount Sam was reclassified to Sam Hill on 02 May 1966, but the road name was not changed to suit the reclassification.
Council is proposing to rename Mt Sam Road ‘Sam Hill Road’ to avoid confusion during emergency situations.
The above proposed road naming adheres to the Naming rules for places in Victoria– Statutory requirements for naming roads, features and localities 2022 (the Naming Rules) and Australian New Zealand Standards for rural and urban addressing AS/NZS 4819:2011.

Community members are invited to respond to this proposal before its formal consideration by the Registrar of Geographic Names Victoria.
