We are proposing to rename the eastern section of Albatross Road KALIMNA to ‘Stormbird Drive’. The location and extent of the road proposed to be renamed is shown below:
The extended community is invited to provide feedback on this proposal.
Council received a request from Ambulance Victoria to rename one of the two sections of Albatross Road. The Road is divided by a gully creating two separate roads, causing confusion for emergency responders and mail/delivery services.
Reference – The Australian/New Zealand Standard for Rural and Urban Addressing – Section 4.2.4
• Contiguous Navigable Road: A named road shall include only one section navigable by vehicles.
Unconnected navigable sections shall be assigned separate road names.
Council investigated this matter and decided to rename the eastern section of Albatross Road. The eastern section of road services 43 properties, compared to 78 properties on the western section of road.
Property owners and occupiers were presented with two potential names to choose from, and Stormbird Drive proved to be the most popular.
Stormbird was a Steamer that serviced Cunninghame (Lakes Entrance) from 1901 and carried out several on water rescues when other vessels were in distress.
Stormbird traded between Mallacoota, Orbost and Lakes Entrance, carting fish from Mallacoota and maize and livestock form Orbost back to Lakes Entrance, to be loaded onto larger vessels headed for Melbourne.
The above proposed road renaming adheres to the Naming rules for places in Victoria– Statutory requirements for naming roads, features and localities 2022 (the Naming Rules) and Australian New Zealand Standard for rural and urban addressing AS/NZS 4819:2011.
This proposal complies with the Naming rules for places in Victoria – Statutory requirements for naming roads, features and localities – 2022.
Affected property owners/ratepayers/occupiers are being consulted regarding the renaming proposal and Council will advertise the results of this consultation in due course.
Community members are invited to respond to this proposal before its formal consideration by the Registrar of Geographic Names Victoria.
