In June 2021, we started phasing out 240-litre household general waste bins. These bins currently make up around 10% of all household services and have been provided free of charge since 2007 while other Victorian and Gippsland councils charged for such services, if they were offered at all. The phase out continues with notification to Bairnsdale residents over the next fortnight.
Residents will receive written notification about their 240L bin service and the collection of bins between March and July. Wy Yung, Lucknow, Eastwood and East Bairnsdale will follow soon after.
Data shows that the average household general waste bin is made up of 40% food waste which can easily be recycled at home. A further 18.4% is material which belongs in the household recycling bin. Residents who still produce excess waste have the option to purchase additional services either through Council or a local contractor.
