On behalf of East Gippsland Shire Council, I extend sincere condolences to the family and friends of former councillor the late Ben Buckley.

Ben made a unique and valuable contribution to East Gippsland, including service to his community through local government.

Ben was first elected as an East Gippsland Shire councillor in 2003 and served the community on five consecutive councils – 18 years – until his retirement in 2020. In his final year on Council, Ben served as Deputy Mayor.

Before becoming an East Gippsland Shire councillor he served 12 years as an Omeo Shire councillor (pre-amalgamation) including one term as President.

As a long-time Benambra resident, away from the Council Chamber, Ben was heavily involved in community life across many pursuits and generations. He will be remembered as a great East Gippsland character who was always approachable and had the interests of his community at heart.
