On behalf of East Gippsland Shire Council, I extend my sincere condolences to the family, friends and former colleagues of former Mayor and Councillor, the late Harvey Bates MBE.

Harvey made a valuable contribution to East Gippsland, including service to his community through local government.

He was elected as an East Gippsland Shire Councillor in 2003 and served the community until 2006 (3 years and 9 months) including as Mayor in 2003-04.

During his time on Council, Harvey demonstrated diligence, thoughtfulness and leadership for his community.

He will be remembered for his significant contribution to East Gippsland, not only though his work in local government. Harvey had a long-time interest in sport and youth development, and directly and indirectly helped many community members achieve their goals through the creation of and support for the East Gippsland Sports Foundation.
